Violin practice app

About this app

A web app that puts a Violin fingerboard on your phone screen so you can check stopping positions, finger numbers and pitch as you practise. Nothing to install — it runs in the browser.

🎼Practise a piece
Choose one of the pieces provided, or load MusicXML / MIDI, and you get a score with fingerings. Tap a note to change its fingering.
Metronome
Set a tempo and a time signature and let it run. You can switch it to a drum pattern, and the time counts towards your practice record.
🎵Scale practice
Inside piece practice, choose a key and a number of octaves and the scale is laid out on the fingerboard and the stave, with backing and metronome.
🎯Tuner
Reads the pitch from your microphone and shows where the sounding note sits on the fingerboard.

Showing the fingerboard, loading scores and editing fingerings all happen on your device. Only when you are signed in are your settings, fingerings, favourites, practice record and published pieces kept on the server. Microphone audio from the tuner never leaves your device.

What it does

  • Stopping positions are worked out from string-length ratios. Position names (open, low, middle, high) and finger numbers are offered as a guide.
  • Scales appear on both the fingerboard and the stave once you pick a key and octave count, with backing (drums, bass, chords) and a metronome.
  • Scores can be loaded from MusicXML (.xml / .musicxml / .mxl) and MIDI (.mid). For MIDI the closest-sounding track is chosen automatically, and you can switch tracks afterwards.
  • Fingerings can be changed by tapping a note, and changes are saved automatically. You can also export them and carry them to another device.
  • Tempo changes, a one-bar count-in and looped playback over a chosen bar range are all supported.
  • The metronome runs at the tempo, time signature and beat you choose. The tempo can be set with the number, the slider, or by tapping at the speed you want.
  • Pieces you like can be starred with the heart at the top left of the fingerboard, and the list can be filtered down to favourites.
  • A score you have loaded can be published as one of “Everyone’s pieces”, and pieces published by others appear in the same list. You can withdraw yours at any time.
  • Practice time is recorded on a calendar, with a monthly total and the number of days practised.
  • The tuner reads pitch from the microphone and shows the deviation in cents along with the input level.
  • You can switch between fingerboard and stave, show fret lines, zoom the fingerboard in and out, and use landscape.
  • Sign in with an email address or a Google account and your settings, fingerings, favourites and practice record carry over to another device.
  • Japanese, English, Spanish and Chinese are supported. Add it to your home screen and it opens like an app.

How to use it

  1. Pick how you want to practise from the buttons above. Once you are signed in, the piece list opens straight away next time.
  2. For piece practice choose a piece or a score file. Scale practice lives inside piece practice, where you pick a key and octave count. The metronome just needs a tempo and a time signature.
  3. Press play and the notes sound, with the position of the current note shown on the fingerboard.

Questions

Do I need to install anything?
No. Just open it in a browser. Adding it to your home screen makes it open like an app.
Do I have to sign in?
No. The fingerboard, piece practice, the metronome and the tuner all work without an account. Signing in carries your settings, fingerings, favourites and practice record over to another device.
The microphone does not respond
Microphone input only works over https:// or on localhost. It will not work if the file was opened directly with file://, or if the browser has not been given permission.
Which score files can I use?
MusicXML (.xml / .musicxml / .mxl) and MIDI (.mid).
Can I change the fingerings myself?
Tap a note and the alternatives appear. Your choice is saved automatically, and fingerings can be exported and imported.
Can I use just the metronome?
Yes. “Metronome” on the opening screen runs on its own without loading a score, and the time still counts towards your practice record.
Can I withdraw a piece I published?
Yes — use [Stop publishing] on your own piece in the list. Rights holders can request removal from the gear menu under Contact: choose “Takedown request” and send the title and the reason.

Violin practice: common problems

Short answers to the things that most often stop practice. Tap a question to open the answer.

My intonation will not settle. Where do I start?

Check your fifths and octaves against the open strings first. Before you look at finger shape, check whether the height of your left elbow and the position of your thumb have moved. Watching the fingerboard display while repeating the same note slowly is the fastest route.

The sound breaks when I change strings

There is a gap between leaving one string and arriving on the next. Do not turn with the wrist alone: move your elbow towards the height of the next string in advance. Practise alternating two strings without ever stopping the bow.

I fall apart partway through longer pieces

The place where it collapses is usually the same one. Take just those two to four bars with loop playback, drop the tempo until you can play them, then bring it back up gradually. One run-through at the end is enough.
